Neo-Paganism: Understanding Its Beliefs and Practices

Many people are drawn to Neo-Paganism after leaving the religions they were raised in. The path to identifying as a Neo-Pagan varies greatly, as there is no formal process of conversion. Some groups may have specific requirements, like a probationary study period, but many Neo-Pagans never join any group at all. Anyone can embrace the label of Neo-Pagan, which is one reason why it’s so hard to define. For most, the journey is one of personal spiritual exploration.

For many Neo-Pagans, the experience of finding this path is often described as a feeling of “coming home.” Neo-Paganism offers a name for a religious identity they’ve felt connected to for years. The pull away from the religions of their upbringing may be strong, and they often feel a deep connection to nature—whether it’s the woods, mountains, or seashores. There is a sense of the divine in the Earth, the changing seasons, and even in their own bodies. These individuals may find inspiration in ancient myths, fairy tales, and folklore. And when they meet others who share these beliefs, they realize they are not alone, and discover that they too are Neo-Pagans.
